LocalLab AI and LM Studio

Both run AI models on your Mac, free, with your conversations kept on your computer. LM Studio is built around chatting with language models and serving them to other apps; LocalLab AI is nine AI tools in one Mac app — chat, images, video, music, speech, transcription and more.

Choose LM Studio if

  • You want a local server with OpenAI-style endpoints, so your own code or other apps can use the model.
  • You want the widest choice of chat models — GGUF models through llama.cpp as well as MLX — and the settings to tune them.
  • You chat with your own documents, use MCP tools, or run models headless on a server.
  • You use Windows or Linux as well as a Mac.

Choose LocalLab AI if

  • You want more than chat: pictures, short videos, songs, text read aloud, transcripts, upscaled photos, song stems and text from scans, in one app.
  • You want every tool and model graded for your Mac — the memory it needs and how long it takes — with the settings chosen for you.
  • You'd rather install from the Mac App Store: a sandboxed app, no account, no setup.

How they differ

Chat

Both run chat models on your Mac's GPU with Apple's MLX, and both can work offline once a model is downloaded. LM Studio also runs GGUF models through llama.cpp, so it can load more of the models people publish, and it exposes more settings for each. LocalLab AI keeps it simpler: it picks the best model your Mac runs well, chooses the context length to fit, and lets you ask about photos you attach.

Everything that isn't chat

This is the main difference. LocalLab AI also makes pictures with FLUX.1 schnell, short clips with FastWan 2.2 and songs with MiniMax Music 3; reads text aloud with Qwen3-TTS; transcribes with Whisper; upscales photos and videos; splits songs into stems; and reads text from photos, scans and PDFs. Each is a tool with its own screen, and long jobs wait in a queue.

For developers

LM Studio is the one to pick if you're building something. Its local server speaks OpenAI-style endpoints, so your code, editors and agents can use the model, and its command-line tool and headless version run it without the window. LocalLab AI has no API: it's an app for using AI, not for serving it.

Questions

Can I use LocalLab AI and LM Studio on the same Mac?

Yes. They're separate apps with separate model folders, so they don't interfere — but running a large model in each at once can run out of memory. LocalLab AI checks what's free before it starts a job.

Can LocalLab AI use the models I downloaded in LM Studio?

Not directly: each app keeps its own copy of the models it downloads.

Which is better for coding?

LM Studio, if you want a model in your editor or agent: it serves models over a local API. LocalLab AI's Chat answers coding questions in its own window, but doesn't connect to other tools.
