LocalLab AI and MacWhisper

Both turn recordings into text on your Mac with local models, so your audio stays on your computer. MacWhisper is a dedicated transcription app, with meeting recording and dictation; in LocalLab AI, Transcribe is one of nine AI tools.

Choose MacWhisper if

  • Transcription is what you need most, and you want a dedicated app for it.
  • You want online meetings — Zoom, Teams, Webex and more — recorded and transcribed in the background.
  • You want dictation in any app, speakers told apart in podcasts, or YouTube videos and other apps' audio transcribed.
  • You want a choice of models, including NVIDIA's Parakeet as well as Whisper.

Choose LocalLab AI if

  • You transcribe now and then, and also want chat, pictures, video, music, text to speech, upscaling, stem separation and text from scans — free, in one app.
  • You want every tool and model graded for your Mac — the memory it needs and how long it takes.
  • You want it from the Mac App Store, sandboxed, with no account.

How they differ

Transcription

Both run Whisper on your Mac, in about a hundred languages, and neither needs an internet connection once the model is downloaded. MacWhisper goes further on transcription itself: more models, meetings recorded as they happen, speakers told apart, and dictation. LocalLab AI's Transcribe keeps to the essentials — drop in a file or press Record, and get text or subtitles — at about 35 times real time on an M2 Max.

The rest of the app

LocalLab AI's other tools work with what you transcribe: Chat can summarise a transcript you paste in, and Voice can read text aloud. They also make pictures, short videos and songs, upscale photos, split songs into stems and read text from scans.

Questions

Is LocalLab AI's Transcribe as accurate as MacWhisper?

Both use OpenAI's Whisper, so with the same model the words come out much the same. MacWhisper offers more models to choose from; LocalLab AI uses Whisper large-v3 turbo.

Can LocalLab AI record my Zoom or Teams meetings?

No. It records from your Mac's microphone and transcribes files. For meetings recorded in the background, MacWhisper is the better fit.

Can I use both?

Yes — they're separate apps and don't interfere.
