LocalLab AI and Ollama
Both run AI models on your Mac. Ollama is an open-source way to download and run models from the command line, an API and a simple app — and to reach larger ones in Ollama's cloud. LocalLab AI is nine AI tools in one Mac app, with everything kept on your Mac.
Choose Ollama if
- You're a developer and want models behind a local API, or in coding agents and tools that already support Ollama.
- You want open-source software you can inspect and build on.
- You want a very large library of models with one-line installs, and the option of bigger models in Ollama's cloud.
- You use Windows or Linux as well as a Mac.
Choose LocalLab AI if
- You want more than chat: pictures, short videos, songs, text read aloud, transcripts, upscaled photos, song stems and text from scans, in one app.
- You want every tool and model graded for your Mac — the memory it needs and how long it takes — with the settings chosen for you.
- You want everything on your Mac — no account and no cloud — from a sandboxed App Store app.

How they differ
Chat
Ollama's strength is its model library and how many other tools speak to it: one command downloads a model, and editors, agents and apps connect through its API. Its desktop app gives you a chat window too. LocalLab AI's Chat is an app first: it picks the best model your Mac runs well, says why, and lets you ask about photos you attach.
Everything that isn't chat
LocalLab AI also makes pictures with FLUX.1 schnell, short clips with FastWan 2.2 and songs with MiniMax Music 3; reads text aloud with Qwen3-TTS; transcribes with Whisper; upscales photos and videos; splits songs into stems; and reads text from photos, scans and PDFs. Ollama runs vision models and, since January 2026, has experimental image generation on macOS.
Local and cloud
Ollama can send a prompt to larger models in its cloud when you sign in and choose one; local models stay local. LocalLab AI has no cloud and no account at all: the only connection it makes is to Hugging Face, to download models.
Questions
Can I use LocalLab AI and Ollama on the same Mac?
Yes. They keep separate model folders and don't interfere, though running a large model in each at once can run out of memory. LocalLab AI checks what's free before it starts a job.
Is LocalLab AI open source?
No. It's a free app on the Mac App Store; the open-source software it's built with is listed, with each licence, on its Acknowledgements page.
Which is better for developers?
Ollama: its API and command line are made for building with models. LocalLab AI is for using AI tools directly, and has no API.
